   Section No 2 H.G.V's,

BUs & Coaches over 3.5t

Lorry 1.JPG

The first thing to mention is that I have first hand knowledge of the HGV'S, Buses & Coaches over 3.5t on Titnore Lane as I have lived just off  the lane since 2016.

I have produce a report regarding this matter in the sum of 15 pages long, the  forms for the petition, which I have to insert later and forward to W.S.C.C with the application form. After careful consideration I decided not publish all the report online as most members of the public will probably not read it.

My Summary of the Report

After the past meetings that took place in 2004/05 between the Worthing Society and the Local Authorities, in my opinion it appears Titnore Lane has never been an A or B road and therefore one has to assume this is classed as a C road.

Titnore Lane is a country lane and passes through the South Downs National Park and wooded areas, incorporating several double bends and in some cases becomes narrow where the barriers are constructed to protect the culverts. Also the hedgerows and trees in certain parts on either side of the road reduces the width, therefore this lane is certainly not adequate for HGV'S, Buses & Coaches over 3.5t passing a cyclist, pedestrians, horses and motor bikes is a hazard for oncoming traffic.

Another point raised by several local residents to myself is that HGV'S, Buses & Coaches over 3.5t crossing over the centre white line which they have witness first hand and commented that this is a hazard for oncoming traffic, as far as they are concerned HGV'S, Buses & Coaches over 3.5t should not to be allowed on Titnore Lane what so ever.

The road width is 7.1 metres which is inadequate for the HGV'S, Buses & Coaches over 3.5t at present 44t are travelling on Titnore Lane and their impact is that either side of the road is collapsing, rutting also fracturing the  road surface and after a while pot holes form, as two HGV'S, Buses & Coaches over 3.5t passing each other they do not have much leeway. To prove the point there are now temporary road signs at the northern end of Titnore Lane " Uneven Surface"

Another point is that the damage caused when the HGV'S, Buses & Coaches over 3.5t turn into Titnore Way keep knocking down the concrete pillar protecting the signs and damaging the kerb stones, this is a residential road Class C and may have an impact on the residential buildings due to vibrations when they thunder by.

Over the past few years the traffic has increased including the HGV'S, Buses & Coaches as the population grows and new developments are provided in the local areas. Therefore the food supplies increase together with other items to meet the demand, hence more than ever HGV'S Buses & Coaches travelling down Titnore Lane and in the long term has an effect on the road structure.

To overcome the impact on Titnore Lane  and the damage caused to the road being in constant use, with the on going cost and maintenance  to the Local Authorities and in turn to all of us as tax payers.

The way forward is to divert the HGV'S, Buses & Coaches and other vehicles over 3.5t via the A280 and A259, which these roads are more capable of carrying these types of vehicles without compromising the road construction.

The Only access to Titnore lane for HGV'S, and vehicles over 3.5t would be from the south A259 to serve the Swallows Return, St. Barnabas Hospice and Eurogreen Environmental Ltd only. However, at the roundabout the road width would require to be realign to avoid compromising other road users travelling from the north.

Further option would be to straighten all bends out on Titnore Lane, however due to past history I think this would be a non starter due to the ancient woods and the high cost would be prohibitive.

Finally, I hope after the Local Authorities have read the report together with your help in signing this online petition that common sense prevails and they will reach the same conclusion, prohibit HGV'S, Buses & Coaches and other over 3.5t down Titnore Lane from the north a limited access from the south.
